Michal Hrivnák
28,800 nautical miles. 23 countries. One goal. Join me on the journey to a world championship in performance sailing.
My Story Sail With MeMy Story
I'm Michal Hrivnák, a lifelong sailor driven by precision, perseverance, and an unwavering passion for the sea.
Over the years, I've navigated more than 28,800 nautical miles across 32 destinations spanning 23 countries.
My journey began before I was six, training in the Optimist class. I sailed competitively until age 13, when my family could no longer support a move to the Laser class. I stepped away from the sport — but the sea never let go.
At 18, I returned to sailing on the Adriatic Sea with my father as skipper. That’s when I realized this wasn’t just a hobby. It was my path.
By 21, I earned my first skipper license. At 28, I completed my Category B offshore certification. And at 31, I set my sights on becoming a world-class coach. I bought a FINN dinghy and launched a solo Olympic campaign for Tokyo 2020, training independently and supported only by determination and my future wife, Natali.
In 2020, I began teaching hands-on sailing skills at sea. By 2024, I had expanded into navigation and theory instruction and founded my own racing team, combining tactical training with full physical preparation.
Equally important to me is inspiring young sailors. As a father of three daughters aged 4-7, I've discovered that some of my most meaningful sailing moments happen when they join me and my wife on our sailing adventures. Watching them confidently untie the boat, help us leave port, and work with ropes reminds me that sailing's true magic lies in passing the passion to the next generation.
The mission continues:
- 2025 – ORC Doublehanded World Championship (with long-time sailing partner Matúš)
- 2026 – ORC World or European Championships
- 2027 – Crossing the Atlantic in the ARC Race
These aren’t just competitions. They’re stepping stones toward professional excellence and representing Slovakia on the world stage. Today, I split my time between racing, teaching, and mentoring — helping others take the helm, chase their goals, and navigate with confidence.

ORC Double-Handed World Championship
Monfalcone, Italy – 7–13 September 2025
I'm proud to be officially entered in the ORC Double-Handed World Championship, hosted by Yacht Club Monfalcone, which will welcome the world’s top international teams for this prestigious event
I’ll be racing with my long-time partner Matúš Uličný, aiming for top performance in a field recognized for both competitiveness and innovation. The Double-Handed format challenges sailors to excel in teamwork, strategy, and endurance — all essential skills for World Championship success.
What's ahead:
- Pre-race preparation: boat tuning, gear testing, official inspections, and familiarization at Monfalcone Marina (7–9 Sep)
- Race schedule: from short and long offshore races (8–13 Sep), covering varied courses around Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia
- Competition format: divisions based on rating (APH) and crew gender, with titles awarded per class, and overall World Champion declared in each category
Why it matters:
This event marks a key milestone in our long-term ambition. Competing at Monfalcone offers not just the opportunity to test our limits, but also to demonstrate the skill, professionalism, and passion of a Slovak team on the international stage. It sets the foundation for our upcoming goals in 2026 and the ultimate challenge of crossing the Atlantic in 2027.
